How to be More Disciplined (Actionable Advice)

Lack of discipline is killing your business (and ruining your relationships).

Because if you only do things when you feel like it, you will be:

  1. Unreliable
  2. Inconsistent
  3. Unsuccessful

So, here’s the key to success:

Stop doing what you want. Start doing what’s required.

But this is challenging. Because you’re designed to seek comfort.

You avoid hard things. Choosing to follow your instincts instead.

That’s lack of discipline.

How do you get more discipline?

Discipline is doing things regardless of how you feel.

So, you must detach from your feelings.

Stop seeking immediate gratification. Start making short-term sacrifices for long-term success.

Easy to say, hard to do.

But here’s the secret:

Find a goal that’s worth fighting for

When I built my first business, I was:

  • Waking up at 4am
  • Working 7 days per week
  • Working 16 hours per day
  • Doing stuff, I didn’t want to do
  • I earned no money for the first 9 months. But I didn’t care.

I woke up every morning and did it anyway. I was desperate to win and did whatever it took to get there.

Build natural discipline

So, here’s my hot take: Desperation creates discipline.

When choosing a goal, ask yourself:

  • Would you do this for free?
  • Would you get up at 4am to work?
  • How much are you willing to suffer?
  • Will you sacrifice everything for this?

If the answer is no, you’ll never achieve greatness.

Discipline is natural when you’re desperate to achieve the goal.
